The truth about looking over the horizon is that no-one really knows what’s coming. We all have our own ideas (and aspirations) but the truth is none of us really know.
However, on the edges, the future is already here - in the fishing villages of Bangladesh, the shadow of the Himalayas, the boardrooms of the Fortune 500 and the venture capital portfolios of Silicon Valley.
To bring the conversation to life, we’ve put together a programme made of the most intriguing and inspirational films we could find to inform rich and vibrant discourse on the day.
Here’s a sample of the films we will be showing:
We’ll be using unique and provocative film content to inform workshops that explore the five paradigm shifts that appear to be happening right now.
Films from the edge
Burning Needs
Director, Adam Wakeling, 2009
The real elephant in the room: tropical slash and burn farmers annually generate more carbon than global road and aviation combined, simply to grow their own food. There is an alternative to this, but it is virtually unknown. Burning Needs centres around Mike Hands, a British scientist, who is fighting against all odds to promote a technique that could eradicate slash and burn farming, and Aladino Cabrera, a Honduran farmer who knows no other way of growing food other than to burn vast areas of land. If the technique holds up to scrutiny and Mike receives the funds he desperately seeks, it could quite literally change the world. If Aladino can turn back the clock on decades of destruction and successfully adopt the system, his triumph could be replicated all over the planet. The film will follow a revolution in the making.
In Good Company
Director: Mallika Jalan/Debangshu Mitter, 2009
A timely film showcasing the potential for India to lead a paradigm shift to a low-carbon economy, this film tells the little-known story of how Indian companies and entrepreneurs responding to the climate challenge. With India set to become one of the world’s top emitters of greenhouse gases, the film focuses attention on how emerging markets will respond to a carbon-constrained global economy. The film makes a powerful case for why a proactive approach by Indian business and entrepreneurs is not only necessary, it is possible. Presenter, Malini Mehra, argues that these companies are the key to unlocking political stalemate. Featuring prominent Indian CEOs from companies such as Infosys, Wipro, Mahindra, Tata, HSBC India, Godrej and others, the film provides a truly unique insight into the views and activities of India’s climate leaders.
Wake Up, Freak Out
Director: Leo Murray, 2008
We are only now accepting that the newest climate science suggests we are about to pass the point of no return, to unstoppable, catastrophic global warming. This short animation explains the science of positive feedback mechanisms and effectively illustrates exactly what it means when scientists say that the Earth's climate system has a tipping point. The film charts the history of the activities that led to our current climate crisis and explored the possibilities still open to us to prevent the worst natural and humanitarian disaster in human history.
